About

Kelley R. Atwood

Now based in Lansdale of Montgomery County, PA, I am a vocal music educator with over 30 years of experience. I've worked with voices of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. I've shared my passion for vocal music as a public school music teacher and choral director, a private studio voice teacher, a church music director and cantor, a high school musical theatre vocal coach, and a soloist. I was also the Founder and Artistic Director of the Lehigh Valley Youth Chorus (LVYC), an independent in-residence ensemble at Northampton Community College for eight years.

In my private studio, I've successfully prepared students for auditions and performances for school solos and ensembles, PMEA auditions, school and community musicals, and college auditions. A number of my students were recognized for their musical theatre performances at the State Theatre's Tony Awards – inspired “Freddy Awards” in Easton, PA.

I've had the privilege of adjudicating high school choral festivals and vocal
competitions, as well as chairing the Eastern Division Children's Honor Choir and the National Division High School Multicultural Honor Choir (co-chair) for The American Choral Directors Association. As a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), I currently serve on the board of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of NATS.
After earning a BS degree in Music Education with a Choral/Vocal emphasis from Penn State University, I was blessed with mentors who inspired me to do what I love and to do it well. As a classically trained soprano, I studied privately with opera singer Julia Kemp Rothfuss (Westminster Choir College), daughter of the renowned pioneer of modern children’s choirs, Helen Kemp. I worked closely with Judith Willoughby, a choral clinician, conductor, and former Artistic Director of the Canterbury Youth Choruses (Oklahoma City University), the Temple University Children's Choir, and the Choral Society of Montgomery County (MCCC). Concurrently, I pursued private conducting lessons with composer and choral conductor Dr. Michael Mendoza (The College of New Jersey). As a life-long learner, I continue to seek learning opportunities through courses, workshops, and independent study that will help me to grow as an educator and better serve the needs of my students.

Voice Lessons

I offer weekly lessons and do my best to accommodate my students' schedules. Students may choose either 45-minute or 60-minute lessons.

Although lessons are tailored to each individual student's needs and goals, learning to sing freely in any style of music without vocal injury is of utmost importance for all singers. To achieve this outcome, I focus on teaching healthy vocal technique and developing healthy vocal habits while cross-training in various styles. My instruction addresses posture, breathing, phonation, diction, interpretation, style, presentation, artistry, and mind and body awareness while also detecting and releasing tensions that can hinder one's vocal wellness and progress. Students discover how the voice works and develop musicianship by building skills in music theory, ear-training, sight-reading, and score-reading.

Over time, students gain greater confidence in themselves and in their own vocal abilities, utilizing all of the skill sets gained through vocal study for auditions and performances. Lesson time is dedicated as necessary to prepare for these special opportunities. Additional studio performances and experiences take place throughout the year and are open to all students.

Testimonials

Testimonials

"Mrs. Atwood was HIGHLY recommended from several leads and their parents from the recent high school musical. After studying under her for just a few weeks, our son was able to perform at the recital.  Mrs. Atwood is an incredible teacher, mentor and friend to the students. She listens to their goals and tailors the lessons accordingly. Out of all my son’s extracurricular activities, this is the ONLY one he NEVER misses!"
